Ethical Chocolate, Indigenous Roots

Ethical Chocolate, Indigenous Roots

Today, on the International Day of Indigenous People, we celebrate the deep relationships we’ve cultivated with indigenous communities who are not only stewards of the land but also co-creators in our mission to craft sustainable, non-exploitative chocolate.

At Castronovo Chocolate, we are proud to work alongside the Awajún of the Amazonas region of Peru, the Arhuacos of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia, the Piaroa of the Orinoquía region of Colombia, and the Piapoco of the Amazonas region of Venezuela. These partnerships are rooted in respect, reciprocity, and a shared vision: to build a nature-based economy that protects vital ecosystems through the creation of high-quality, heirloom chocolate. We are also creating a market for non-extractive products from the rain forest, including baskets, jewelry made from seeds, tropical fruit we add to recipes, Amazonian vanilla and alternative Theobroma.

By sourcing rare, genetically diverse cacao directly from indigenous growers, we help preserve rainforest biodiversity while ensuring that communities receive fair compensation, often two to three times more than commodity rates. This is fair trade chocolate in its truest form: transparent and regenerative.

Our award-winning single-origin bars are more than just chocolate bars. They are a testament to the power of ethical collaboration and ecological stewardship. Every bite supports a sustainable supply chain that honors indigenous knowledge, protects endangered cacao varieties, and contributes to the long-term health of our planet.

As we mark this day, we reaffirm our commitment to crafting chocolate that uplifts indigenous voices, sustains rainforests, and redefines what it means to be truly ethical in the world of fine chocolate.
