origins story

I first visited Chazuta in the San Martin region of Peru in 2019, and I was delighted by their local ceramic studio located right on the edge of the Amazon. I had been remembering these ceramics ever since and found a way to import some of them to Miami, so I could create these unique holiday gifts for you.

In 2012, Chazuta pottery was designated as one of Peru's national cultural heritage sites. Rooted in ancestral traditions, it embodies the community’s identity, history, and values. Distinguished by its symbolic designs and time‑honored techniques passed down through generations, this craft is both an artistic expression and a vital source of economic livelihood for the indigenous women living at the edge of the Amazon. Each pot is a unique piece made with local clay and wood fired. The dimensions are about 3.5 inched diameter and 3" tall. These can be used as cups or bowls. They are perfect for hot chocolate, tea, yogurt or ice cream.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, or the "Heart of the World," is sacred to the Arhuaco people. Mamo Hernán stewards the community's cacao with reverence, adhering to principles that honor its spiritual significance. By preserving native varieties and avoiding monoculture, Arhuacos maintain a harmonious relationship with the Earth. For the Arhuacos, cacao is more than a crop – it's a connection to their ancestral territory, which they heal and protect through devoted care.
