Christmas Amazonian Gift Basket Chocolate Sampler
I have been working with indigenous women in the Amazon region of Colombia and Venezuela to build a market for non-timber forest products, such as cacao and artisanal handicrafts. My aim is to support sustainable livelihoods of indigenous women and protect the rainforest from deforestation.
These exquisite gift baskets are meticulously crafted by the indigenous Piapoco women, who live along the banks of the Orinoco River in the Amazon region of Venezuela. The Piapoco skillfully harvest fronds from the moriche palm (Mauritia flexuosa), a native species of the Amazon. Employing an intricate technique, they carefully cut the fronds into strands, boil and dry them to create the fiber that the women weave into these stunning baskets with a natural seed-button closure. These baskets are works of art.
During her recent journey to Colombia, I collaborated with the Piapoco to commission a special basket with a lid, specifically designed to present our chocolate as a special gift. This versatile basket can be repurposed for various occasions - ideal for picnics, storage for cookies, or as a warming basket for your weekend pancakes. It seamlessly combines artistry and functionality, making it a truly distinctive and sustainable addition to any collection. Your acquisition marks the inaugural international trade involving these eco-friendly baskets, providing crucial support to the Piapoco indigenous people.
