Piaroa medium basket with lid & biscotti - rare find
This past August, I traveled to the Amazon region of Colombia, called Orinoquia, 3 hours down the Orinoco River to the village of Sarrapia, Colombia in a high-conflict zone to meet with the Piaroa indigenous people. My aim is to build a market of non-timber forest products, such as cacao and artisanal handicrafts, from the Amazon region to support sustainable livelihoods of indigenous women and protect the rainforest from deforestation.

Weaving Art
These handicrafts are unique works of art.
Using plant materials collected in the rainforest, these crafts are hand woven by the Piaroa indigenous women in the village of Sarrapia, along the Orinoco River in Colombia. Their craft, unique to the Piaroa, was passed on from their ancestor. These pieces are the last artisanal remnants of a culture at risk of being forgotten.

-Subtle variations in the shape are a testament to the authenticity of the Piaroa handcrafted process and their use of natural materials. They make each basket wabi sabi (i.e. the Japanese philosophy where natural imperfections are part of the beauty of the art).
